into God's Overflowing Gift

What’s the connection between wine and the Bible?

Wine is the most talked about food in the Bible. Jesus himself turned water into wine at a wedding and celebrated with wine in fellowship with his disciples. • No, you do not have to drink or serve wine with this study. If you don’t drink alcohol, or have someone in the group who is in recovery, it might be best to just watch the sessions and discuss them. What is important is to begin talking about wine and why it is such an important theme in the Bible and understand this gift of God better.

  • Allow that person to be who they are and where they are in regards to wine and alcohol, more widely speaking. The fact that this person has joined the group means they want to learn about wine as a gift from God. The purpose of this study is to explore and talk about wine as a gift from God as the Bible presents it and allow conversations to unfold.

  • You do not need to know anything about wine to participate in this study. With an open mind and heart, you will begin to get a glimpse into this special gift, and that might whet your appetite to learn more about it, but we are not wine experts nor are we asking you to become a wine expert. All we ask is an open mind and heart.

  • Yes, it is OK for Christians to drink wine. The Bible is foundational for teaching us about our life in Christ. Feasting, eating wholesome food and enjoying delicious wine, is one way God wants to reveal his love and benevolence towards us. As you will learn from a biblical perspective, drinking wine is about receiving God’s gift of wine with joy and gratitude, and doing so in moderation and with a spirit of reverence for what God brings forth from this earth.

  • Alcohol, if not consumed in moderation, can be detrimental to your physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Currently, scientists are revising previous research into the health benefits of wine, and the World Health Organization has issued a statement that no amount of alcohol is safe when it comes to human health. This raises questions: what kind of alcohol are we speaking about? And if we consider wine, is it mass-produced with lots of pesticides, herbicides, and additives applied? And how does one measure the social, emotional, and spiritual benefits of beauty, joy, conviviality, and community? When wine is consumed in the context of a nourishing meal or celebratory feast, social and spiritual bonds are developed, nourished, and strengthened. The beauty of a well-crafted wine paired with delicious and healthy food feeds and nourishes us in ways that the medical sciences cannot measure nor weigh, for they go beyond the physical and scientific into the social and spiritual realm where wisdom, not science, sheds light on our path.
